Starting the Prey for the Pack Quest

The quest "Prey for the Pack" is a time-sensitive side quest in Dragon's Dogma 2 that tasks you with finding a missing boy named Rodge. To begin, you must travel to the Checkpoint Rest Town, located on the border between Vermund and Battahl, far to the west of the capital city of Vernworth.

The most efficient way to reach this area is to hire an oxcart at the western exit of Vernworth. Once you arrive at the Checkpoint Rest Town, head uphill to the apothecary shop located in the southern part of the town. As you approach, the owner, Morris, will automatically trigger a conversation, pleading for your help to find his grandson, who has been dragged away by wolves.

Warning

Time Sensitivity: This quest is marked with an hourglass icon in your menu, indicating it is subject to the passage of time. If you spend too much time resting at inns or wandering aimlessly, the quest will fail permanently. Prioritize this objective immediately after accepting it.

Gathering Information in Checkpoint Rest Town

Once the quest is active, you cannot simply run into the wilderness to find Rodge. You must first gather information from the local villagers to narrow down his last known location. While you might be tempted to explore, speaking to the right NPCs is essential to update your map markers.

You need to speak with three specific NPCs near the town entrance and around the well. These individuals provide the clues necessary to reveal the path Rodge was taken on.

Key Witnesses

  • Alsa: A woman wearing a green dress. You can usually find her near the well or the town entrance.
  • Timothy: A man wearing a large hat, often found near the well. He provides crucial details about the direction in which the wolves fled.
  • Jacint: An older woman wearing an apron or smock. She wanders near the town entrance and will provide additional context regarding the abduction.

After speaking with these individuals, your quest marker will update, directing you toward the cenotaph (a graveyard area) located east of the town. This is the spot where the wolves were last seen with the boy.

Tracking the Trail to the Putrid Cave

Once you reach the cenotaph, the quest marker may disappear, leaving you to find the trail yourself. This is where the game’s environmental storytelling comes into play. Rodge was gathering flowers when he was taken, and these flowers act as your breadcrumb trail.

Tip

The Blue Flower Trail: Look for scattered blue petals on the ground. If you are playing at night, these flowers glow, making them significantly easier to spot. Follow the trail of blue flowers heading east from the cenotaph.

Follow the petals across the wooden bridge and along the main road. Eventually, you will see the trail veer off the main path into a small forest trail. Continue following the white and blue petals until you reach the entrance of the Putrid Cave.

  1. Locate the Cenotaph: Head east from the village and take the right path at the fork.
  2. Cross the River: Use the wooden bridge north of the area to continue tracking.
  3. Follow the Petals: Keep an eye on the ground for blue flowers leading off the main road into the forest.
  4. Enter the Cave: Once you reach the Putrid Cave entrance, prepare for combat.

Rescuing Rodge and Escorting Him Home

Inside the Putrid Cave, you will find Rodge alongside a pack of wolves. You must defeat the wolves quickly to prevent them from harming the boy. Fortunately, these are standard wolves and should not pose a significant challenge if you are properly equipped.

Once the enemies are cleared, speak with Rodge. He will recognize you as the rescuer and agree to follow you back to Checkpoint Rest Town.

Tip

Escort Mechanics: Rodge will follow you automatically as you walk back to town. If you move too fast or if he gets stuck on terrain, he may fall behind. If he stops moving or gets stuck, you can physically pick him up and carry him to help him navigate difficult paths.

Be mindful of the time of day during your return trip. The area around the cenotaph can become dangerous at night, spawning undead skeletons and ghosts. If it is dark, it is highly recommended to pick up Rodge and run through the danger zones rather than stopping to fight, as your primary goal is his safe return to the apothecary.

Completing the Quest and Rewards

Upon successfully escorting Rodge back to Checkpoint Rest Town, head directly to Morris’s apothecary shop. Once you arrive with the boy, a cutscene or dialogue will trigger, confirming that he has been reunited with his grandfather.

For your efforts in saving the boy, you will receive the following rewards:

  • 11,000 Gold: A substantial sum that is very useful for purchasing gear or upgrades.
  • 2 Miracle Roborants: These are high-value consumables that restore a large amount of both Health and Stamina.

This quest is a perfect example of the dynamic, time-sensitive nature of the Dragon's Dogma 2 world. By paying attention to NPC dialogue and environmental clues, you can ensure a successful outcome for the citizens of the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I take too long to start the quest?

If you delay too long after Morris asks for your help, the quest will fail. The game tracks the passage of time, and the boy's life is at risk. It is best to treat this as a priority immediately upon accepting it.

Can I do this quest at night?

Yes, you can. In fact, the blue flowers you need to track are easier to see at night because they glow. However, be prepared to face tougher enemies like skeletons and ghosts on your way back, so ensure your party is prepared for combat.

Do I need to fight the wolves in the cave?

Yes, you must defeat the wolves inside the Putrid Cave to rescue Rodge. They are not particularly strong, but do not ignore them, as they will attack both you and Rodge.
